David T. Hamamoto, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Hamamoto is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NorthStar. Mr. Hamamoto has served as NorthStar’s Chief Executive Officer since October 2004 and served as President from October 2004 to April 2011. Mr. Hamamoto is a director and has been NorthStar’s Chairman since October 2007. Mr. Hamamoto has also served as NorthStar Real Estate Income Trust, Inc.’s Chairman of the Board since inception. Mr. Hamamoto has further served as the Chairman of the Board of NorthStar Healthcare Income, Inc., since January 2013. Mr. Hamamoto co-founded NorthStar Capital Investment Corp., the predecessor to NorthStar, in 1997. From 1983 to 1997, Mr. Hamamoto worked for Goldman, Sachs & Co., or Goldman Sachs, where he was co-head of the Real Estate Principal Investment Area and a general partner of the firm between 1994 and 1997. During Mr. Hamamoto’s tenure at Goldman Sachs, he initiated the firm’s effort to build a real estate principal investment business under the auspices of the Whitehall Funds. Mr. Hamamoto received a B.S. from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Albert Tylis, President
Mr. Tylis is the President of NorthStar. Prior to joining NorthStar, Mr. Tylis was the Director of Corporate Finance and General Counsel of ASA Institute. From 1999 through February 2005, Mr. Tylis was a senior attorney at the law firm of Bryan Cave LLP, where he was a member of the Corporate Finance and Securities Group, the Transactions Group, the Banking, Business and Public Finance Group, and supported the firm's Real Estate Group. Mr. Tylis graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and holds a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.
Daniel R. Gilbert, Chief Investment and Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer, NorthStar Realty Asset Management, LLC
Mr. Gilbert serves as Chief Investment and Operating Officer of NorthStar and is the Chief Executive Officer of NorthStar Realty Asset Management, LLC, the holding company for NorthStar’s asset management business. Mr. Gilbert, together with our President, is responsible for the day to day operation of the company with his specific focus on our investment and portfolio management areas. In addition, as the Chief Executive Officer of our asset management business, he is responsible for the strategy and overall guidance of NorthStar’s asset management activities including overseeing and managing NorthStar’s public, non-traded REITs. Mr. Gilbert also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of NorthStar’s non-traded REITs including NorthStar Real Estate Income Trust, Inc. (NorthStar Income) and NorthStar Healthcare Income, Inc. and the President of NorthStar Income. Mr. Gilbert served as Co-President of NorthStar from April 2011 until January 2013 and in various other senior management positions since our initial public offering in October 2004. Mr. Gilbert served as an Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Mezzanine Lending of NorthStar Capital Investment Corp. our predecessor company. Prior to that role, Mr. Gilbert was with Merrill Lynch & Co. in its Global Principal Investments and Commercial Real Estate Department and prior to joining Merrill Lynch, held accounting and legal-related positions at Prudential Securities Incorporated. Mr. Gilbert holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady, New York.
Debra A. Hess, Chief Financial Officer
Ms. Hess is the Chief Financial Officer of NorthStar and has served in that position since July 2011. Ms. Hess most recently served as Chief Financial Officer of H/2 Capital Partners, a position she held from August 2008 until June 2011. From March 2003 until August 2008, Ms. Hess was a managing director at Fortress Investment Group (NYSE: FIG), a global management firm, where she also served as Chief Financial Officer for one of its portfolio companies, Newcastle Investment Group (NYSE: NCT), a real estate investment and finance company. Earlier in her career, from 1993 through February 2003, Ms. Hess served in various capacities at Goldman, Sachs & Co. (NYSE:GS), including as Vice President in the Principal Finance Group and as a Manager of Financial Reporting in Goldman Sachs' Finance Division. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Ms. Hess worked in the corporate credit policy group at Chemical Bank for two years and spent five years at Arthur Anderson & Co. as a supervisory senior auditor focused on financial services firms. Ms. Hess has a Masters' in Business Administration in Finance from New York University and a Bachelors of Science in Accounting from the University of Connecticut.
Ronald J. Lieberman, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
Mr. Lieberman is our Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. Mr. Lieberman has served as our General Counsel and Assistant Secretary since April 2011, as our Executive Vice President since April 2012 and our Secretary since January 2013. Prior to joining NorthStar, Mr. Lieberman was a partner in the Real Estate Capital Markets practice at the law firm of Hunton & Williams LLP. Mr. Lieberman practiced at Hunton & Williams from September 2000 until March 2011 where he advised numerous REITs, including mortgage REITs, and specialized in capital markets transactions, mergers and acquisitions, securities law compliance, corporate governance and other board advisory matters. Prior to joining Hunton & Williams, Mr. Lieberman was the Associate General Counsel at Entrade, Inc., which was then a NYSE listed company. Mr. Lieberman started his legal career at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom LLP. Mr. Lieberman holds a B.A., M.B.A. and J.D., each from the University of Michigan.
Daniel D. Raffe, Executive Vice President
Mr. Raffe has been one of our Executive Vice Presidents since April 2006 and was a managing director from November 2005. Mr. Raffe is responsible for running our Real Estate Net Lease Acquisitions business. Mr. Raffe has 17 years of real estate and legal expertise. Prior to joining NorthStar, Mr. Raffe was with GE Business Property since 2002 as a Vice President responsible for leading real estate net lease acquisitions and structured finance transactions in the Eastern and Midwest United States. Prior to that, from 1997 to June 2000, Mr. Raffe was a Managing Director at Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. where he advised corporate owners of real estate on the best financial strategies for their real estate holdings, and structured and implemented sale leaseback, synthetic lease and other real estate finance transactions. Prior to Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. Raffe worked for both Capital Lease Funding, L.P. and Kidder Peabody where he engaged in a variety of commercial real estate finance transactions including sale leasebacks, net lease acquisitions and financings and other whole loan originations. Mr. Raffe began his career with the law firm of Dewey Ballantine. Mr. Raffe graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Accounting and also received a law degree from Georgetown University.
